The fountain was dry and I was thirsty. I walked to where a couple of park rangers were chatting nearby. One of the rangers who looked to be a middle-20s blonde was outside the car of a man ranger. The man drove off. I approached the woman ranger and asked, “Can you help me with something?” “What’s your problem?” she asked. I said, “The drinking fountain isn’t working.” We started walking over to the drinking fountain. On the way I remarked that it was fine weather, but hot. She allowed for that and asked about my walk. I answered her question and let silence happen for a few seconds. The woman was more handsome than pretty, but I decided to notice her as a woman–just for fun and maybe to brighten her day. I smiled at her, but not because of a conscious decision. The woman wasn’t looking directly at me. She responded with a small smile. Obviously, she was watching me carefully out of the corner of her eye. (Thinking back about my smile, it wasn’t a huge beta smile or a super-cocky smile–more like amused mastery. Her smile said, “Let’s see what you got, buddy.”) No hair-smoothing. She was either merely curious or quite self-controlled. She seemed very self-controlled like you’d expect from law-enforcement types.
