None of that is the case anymore. I’m a huge metal fan, and I can honestly say that I have never sensed the slightest danger when attending any of the numerous shows I’ve been to in the past ten years, regardless of whether it’s black metal, death metal, power metal, or thrash. I’ve never seen metal fans behave like the fans in the video I linked to — not that the behavior depicted is atrocious, but it’s WILD. Modern metal fans are not wild in the way that the blue collar fans of old were. They’re more nerdy about their music, but that sense of animalism is gone.
Metal’s current fan based is composed mainly of nerds, ranging from D&D dorks to science majors to hipsters. The fanbase has a definite aspergersy tendency these days (myself included, although I’ve learned how to keep most of them in check), listening almost exclusively to metal (or maybe also the ambient, noise, neo-folk post-rock) and obsessively categorizing and sorting their collection.
Proles no longer listen to metal, with the exception of one sub-genre: nu-metal. Proles like Slipknot, Mudvayne, Korn, Limp Bizkut, Lincoln Park, Papa Roach. Most “true metal” fans — myself included — would not be ashamed to have a friend find a single song by one of these bands in our music collection. Those bands are considered white trash music. Modern metal fans prefer black metal, death metal, power metal, old school thrash, and folk metal, and are very strict conception of which bands are actually true to their craft.
